Comme Des Garcons Ready-to-Wear Fall 2008

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

It’s rockabilly meets negligee meets… The Ring? Granted that it’s not as boring and almost stereotypical as the men’s collection for Comme de Garcons, but it still comes as a disappointment for lady CGG fans who weren’t looking for two levels of meta-layering on its runway. It’s like Valentines Day all season long! And I’m questioning its value.

Seriously, though, this was Kawakubo in one of her more skittish moods. As she put it, “There’s value in bad taste, too. This is Comme des Garçons bad taste.”

Valentines Day: From the Heart of Glass

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Only recently was I discussing the endearing nature of a young Philip Glass, to now find that he has recently warmed my heart yet again, now 70 years in age. Bitten by the love bug, he has composed 7 beautiful pieces of music entitled Songs and Poems for Solo Cello, for his “fortyish” cellist girlfriend, Wendy Sutter. The album releases today, and you can preview it on Amazon. It’s amazing. Maybe it’s because I’m a former cellist myself, but it really speaks to my romantic side. Here is an excerpt from their quick interview with NYmag, talking about how they first struck a chord in their relationship.

When did you get to know each other better?

W.S.: Philip asked me to do a documentary film’s music, originally for cello and voice. By e-mail I said, “Would you mind if we turned this into a solo piece?” We’d have these old-fashioned meetings, where I’d bring the cello and he’d sit at the piano. Some of the music is so stunning, so emotional; that was kind of my first clue that maybe he liked me more than as a cellist. It was sort of an old-fashioned romantic gesture.
