Just in time: Justin.tv
The internet wins again! Justin.tv exists and I can now watch live basketball games from some random dudes internet feed (Shout outs to datballa26).
This website realizes my adolescent dreams of watching live TV on the internet, and does it with all the compromises that my inner internet nerd lives for. It’s occasionally choppy, unreliable, low-res and filled with awful graphics; a true throwback to the IRC days, complete with the “is this shit legal?” inner dialogue. Any moral concerns quickly vaporize when you realize you can watch LeBron James live whenever you want.

AGO Opening Weekend, Nov. 14 – 16th
Speaking of Canadians and moments to be proud of, the new AGO redesign by world famous Toronto-born architect Frank Gehry is finally open to the public. While his designs have always been met with controversy – and his first building in Canada was no exception – Gehry has always managed to trump his skeptics’ suspicions by the time he unleashes the final product.
Anyone who has ever stood in the presence of one of his buildings cannot ignore the awe-inspiring imagination and provocative level of sculptural complexity involved in his work. It’s phenomenal, and a real gift for our city in terms of both art and architecture.
For its opening weekend, the AGO will be providing free admission all weekend long. Their site won’t reveal what new exhibits they’re featuring, but my research tells me there’s new work included by Canadian artist Dan Bergeron, and Kara Walker.
Admission hours:
* Friday, November 14, 4 pm to 12 midnight
* Saturday, November 15, 10 am to 12 midnight
* Sunday, November 16, 10 am to 5:30 pm

Lioness, You’re My Heart
Lioness are ready to release their slab of distorted disco meat into the world on CD, LP and iTunes. While controller.controller’s former rhythm section blasts heavy analog disco, singer Vanessa Fischer (ex-No Dynamics) proves that she was a dance music vocalist all along.
They’ll be at Wrong Bar in Toronto this Friday playing the music live. You don’t often see such a good local lineup:
Lioness
Stop Die Resuscitate (Live)
Mikey Apples
Jaime Sin (Seventh Heaven)
10pm
$10/$15 with CD
Wrongbar, 1297 Queen Street West
Lioness - You’re My Heart MP3 - The first song on the ep is their best known. Groove to this.
Lioness Myspace - For a special treat, their myspace includes the Pilotpriest remix.

Malcolm Gladwell, Outliers
The internet is a twitter over new features on Malcolm Gladwell’s new book, Outliers: The Story of Success, with a rumoured $4 million advance given by his publishers and bound to surpass his two previous bestsellers, The Tipping Point and Blink.
From the Globe to the New York Times, two out of three articles I read yesterday referred to him as a “geek pop star”. But leave it to New York magazine to introduce a new adjective, gladwellian, as well as providing the most in-depth, lengthy coverage of them all. Outliers hits stores on November 18, 2008.

Weekend Reading: British Style GQ
At a retail Canadian price of $16.80, the British GQ Style edition this month has been the perfect Sunday impulse buy. With featured articles on “Francis Bacon and the Male Muse”, by Will Self, and an article by Burberry designer Christopher Bailey on the famous paintings by L.S. Lowry, it’s the article on “Why Whisky is for Winners” by Mark E Smith, punk legendary and frontman of The Fall that launches this issue into the no-brainer buying category.
Personally, I always get a female voyeuristic kick out of keeping up to date with the fine points of male maintenance, so the the feature on the hottest electric razors on the market is also worth noting. Always a reminder to tuck in your dress shirts to create a slimmer look.

The Styrofoam Ones debut 7” comes out tomorrow with a release party this Saturday at Rolly’s Garage (124 Ossington). They’ve been refining their garage lazer attack with much success this year, so they deserve to set it off right by celebrating with another sweaty room full of bouncing people.

Toscana Vice
...And in Eurotrash news, the Italian police force has come one step closer to their dream of becoming Crockett and Tubbs by commissioning a Lamborghini police cruiser. The Gallardo LP560-4 Polizia, with 540 horsepower and capable of speeds up to 203 mph, will be used officially to chase down the speeding drivers of Italy’s rural highways, which have long been plagued by motor-crime, and unofficially as a fighetta-magnet during off-duty hours.
The kind folks at Lamborghini have sent one unit over to la polizia free of charge, customized with all sorts of crazy Batman-style anti-bad guy gadgets, along with all the necessary Benny Benassi CDs to get the job done right.

Lykke Li AutoErotique Remix
I just woke up to find a new remix from the AutoBros in my mailbox, and it’s their heartfelt rendition of Lykke Li’s Little Bit. Lykke Li’s sultry ‘ooo-ooo’s, combined with crisp drums and a rolling bassline makes for a surefire dancefloor hit. Third time listening through and now I feel all “erotique” (ha).

Halloween in Montreal
DJing in Montreal is 1 part DJing, 1 part hanging with montreal pals, and 5 parts driving there.
The French Canadians offer Halloween gumbo of radio beats, vinyl, dj parties and breakfasts. Next time you’re in Montreal check out Dusty’s for the best service in town. I give it a ten.
Thank you to Montreal for putting us up — we’ll be back in a flash. We heart Primitive Records and all the staff, Mike D, Ilya, Ben, Stefan, Mike S, Meredith, and Ben.

La Belle Ville de Montréal
We’re all heading up to Montréal for tonight’s Hallowe’en masquerade ball at Coda. Things I’m looking forward to (besides seeing Pilotpriest live): Mini-burgers at Patati Patata, record shopping at Primitive, and going to the greatest design bookshop in Canada at the CCA. We’ll be updating the blog throughout the trip so keep checking back for more.
