Depeche Mode: Enjoy the Silence (Ewan Pearson Remix)
Andre’s Mare post made me think of how the Deftones used to cover of Depeche Mode a lot. I love both bands, but the Deftones covers, like all cover versions that I’ve heard of Depeche Mode, never quite stand up to the original. I spent a few hours listening through the DM discography again last night. I checked for tickets to their July Toronto show… totally sold out and craigslist tickets are ridiculously expensive… :(
Here’s a cool acid house remix of their biggest hit, Enjoy the Silence, courtesy of Ewan Pearson.

Also check out the video for their new single, Wrong. Album coming out in April. Pretty intense. HD it.

Mare: Night Goat
Jon’s Sunn O))) post reminded me of one of my favorite Toronto bands Mare.
Mare was a short lived project that never really landed on one sound, but experimented mostly with metal/jazz/noise. That genre description sounds terrible even as i write it, but their Melvins cover Night Goat goes down as one of my most cherished songs.
Mare’s version Night Goat was part of a 2005 Melvins tribute album, yet made no attempt to really keep anything of the original song as a part of their cover. I’m all for it as I’ve never really been a Melvins fan.

Sunn O))) and the Limits of Control
The March issue of Wire magazine had a nice feature on BPB. You can read the interview here.
For April, the magazine has awarded the cover to Portland droners, Sunn O))). With a new album on the way and partial soundtrack credit for Jim Jarmusch’s (Coffee and Cigarettes) new film, The Limits of Control, the band and their sound has unexpectedly caught my interest.

Bonnie “Prince” Billy: Today I Started Celebrating Again
If Tangerine Dream is all about giving a bunch of nerds access to billions of dollars worth of gear, then what happens when you flip it and give a cool-guy musician a cruddy piece of gear?
This Bonnie “Prince” Billy cut is taken off the “At Home With The Groovebox” comp, where Grand Royal gave a Roland Groovebox to bunch of hip bands of the day (Cibbo Matto, Bis, etc.) and let them have at it. Actually, I kind of want to hear this in the club.

Tangerine Dream
In celebration of the new Phoenix album taking over my airwaves, I’m going to post a selection from their new Kitsune Tabloid mix CD.
This song was originally taken from Tangerine Dream’s soundtrack to Risky Business, which is a nice selection even if it’s more known for Tom Cruise dancing to and Bob Seger’s Old Time Rock And Roll.

Bookmarks: Shawn Stussy Blogs
Shawn Stussy is a counterculture legend, having launched Stussy from his Laguna Beach surfboard shop in 1980. He sold the company in 1996, and he’s kept pretty quiet in the years since, but as he’s about to launch his new label S/Double, he’s entering the world of blogging.
Shawn has already started us off with some history, previews of the new line, and a preview of his new design studio that will make your jaw drop. Curious as to how it will progress from there.

Outrageous Claims Dept: DJ Semtex on Kanye and Mr. Hudson
You may consider British radio presenter DJ Semtex a journalist, and this journalist just fired up some noteworthy hyperbole after witnessing a night-long studio sesh between Kanye West and Mr Hudson.
“Kanye West creating music with Mr Hudson in a North London studio is something that I never imagined happening, or witnessing. Several bangers were cooked up, and they will be served up this summer.
After 808s, it’s crazy to see Kanye spitting fire again, it’s like he’s been re-energized, he’s back on that College Dropout sh*t!”
Is this the ranting of a giddy, known-Kanye-fanboy, or is Semtex wearing his journalistic hat on this one? Is he shamelessly trying to bring attention to his rants by namedropping Kanye’s first album, or is there something about the new songs that hearkens to Ye’s early music? I await the Mr. Hudson album, so it remains to be seen.

Playlists: Interview Magazine
In the March issue of Interview, art star Damien Hirst interviews Lily Allen, whose feature is sophisticatedly photographed in retro black and white. While checking it out, I came across this little goldmine of great playlists from some noteworthy people: the likes of Q-Tip, Sebastien Tellier and Sinead O’Connor.
At the moment, I’ve been enjoying Santogold’s playlist — reggae, dirty south, B-52s — and I’m moving on to Tip’s in a minute.
And if you’re inclined to pay attention to what really pretty girls are listening to, Daisy Lowe and Aggy Degn have also provided their own playlists. Afterall, as Interview is quick to point out in capitals letters, EVERYONE is a DJ.

Gabe Knox: Throwback Set, Live @ More Proof
For those of you who missed last week’s More Proof party, the opportunity to lose your shirt has returned.
In a set that was made as a throwback gift to Johnny Hockin, whose birthday is today, I decided to commemorate our friendship with a mix of the finest electroclash from our formative years.
Nerdy, true, but perfect material for the dancefloor. Or, perfect for being drunk on gin while partying in an apartment above a Korean restaurant, as we used to do. Tracklist after the jump.

In Flagranti: Sounds Superb
Call this a bold statement, but it seems as if the endless debate among DJs regarding analog versus digital remains largely resolved. Other than a few fundamentalists, it seems even the staunchest of vinyl junkies bust out the plastic every once in a while to play that perfect edit or an exclusive new song they promised they wouldn’t share.
Of course, we’ve found new ways to bitch and posture and give each other inferiority complexes, but hey — what does any of this have to do with the new In Flagranti tracks that Juno Download has on exclusive? You’ll be playing this awesome Clash edit for months no matter what I say.
